If you're the type who finds themselves loving those so-called love/hate bands, then you're in for a treat. Possessing a frontman with the wildest-ranged falsetto you're likely to hear, a partner-in-crime with the most shuddering of tenor voices and altogether pedalling a quirky brand of pop you'd struggle to find elsewhere today, Wild Beasts are really quite fantastic.
And they're another band who make this love/hate relationship in music a bit of a nonsense. These four boys from the picturesque lake district of Kendal - Hayden Thorpe (falsetto/guitar), Ben Little (guitar), Tom Fleming (bass/tenor) and Chris Talbot (drums/baritone) if you wondered, make great pop music. Simple as. They just do so, as they explained in a recent interview (http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3468370) by treading the line between "being outrageous and how-the-fuck-can-we-get-away-with-that and yet being acceptable and accessible."
The off-kilter splendour of debut LP Limbo, Panto, released on Domino, is testament to this ideal. As are the three songs they've busked for us - 'The Old Dog', 'Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants' and 'Cheerio Chaps' - our first bandstand packed with a full compliment of musicians.
Do enjoy.
