Field Music’s hiatus from band activities, confirmed last June, seemed quite mad given they’d released one of the year’s most staggering records in Tones of Town. Almost one year on though, the Brewis brothers’ reasoning now makes perfect sense with younger sibling David declaring new alias School of Language as the home for his “crazier ideas” and Peter opting for something altogether more grandly orchestrated when recording as The Week That Was.
For anyone completely or even partially enamoured with Tones of Town… Or the bands glistening 2005 self-titled debut… Or even their collection of b-sides and rarities (Write Your Own History) released in between for that matter, the status of Field Music as the now “self proclaimed company” can only be a good thing. On the surface, it gladly means double the output but more particularly once rid of band restrictions, it means more variety and intrigue.
School of Language’s February debut certainly offered that, allowing David to make hey with complex melodies and rhythms. Acoustically, it’s hard to do the album’s layered approach justice but the two songs busked – This Is No Fun and Extended Holiday – simply demonstrate the inherently strong songwriting that underpins everything he does.
Peter had an even more daunting task recreating The Week That Was for us given the 12-strong backing that made his August-due debut (from early signs at least) the sweeping, lusciously pieced together record it is. With baby brother on stamping and clapping duty though, Learn to Learn offers an exclusive taster of what’s to come.
