Seattle-residing, by original way of Texas and more recently North Carolina, David Karsten Daniels has one of those voices that just wears everything. Capable of conveying pain, sorrow or joy while barely changing note, it's a voice that almost begs to be left on its own. Over the course of eight years and five albums, however, it's one that's found aptly complimentary accompaniment.
David began writing and recording in Chapel Hill, aided by friends who formed what became known as the Bu Hannan Collective, releasing records on the label of the same name. The Mayflower (2000), Out From Under Ligne 4 (2001) and Angles (2004) resulted from this fertile period before Brighton-based independent Fat Cat added David to their ever-stellar roster, since bringing 2006's Sharp Teeth and this year's Fear of Flying to more ears.
We begin with the latter, a busked version of lead single 'Martha Ann' before the high-intensity training nearby aroused a hurried search for something altogether more aggressive. The final line of Hurt So Bad was therefore as close as you can get to David Karsten Daniels doing violence. A strolled version of Universe of No Parts and a chat about making afro-beat kids albums and that's your lot.
Enjoy.
